Folic Acid Deficiency Test

Folic acid is an important nutrient coming from the vitamin B class. Folic acid is a key component in developing the RNA and DNA of the cells. Improved vitamin B levels are important in the health and wellness of an individual. A healthy folic acid level is important to have a healthy blood. The lack of folic acid is called folic acid deficiency. Deficiency presents numerous symptoms. However, folic acid deficiency is not readily seen in one's health condition. Therefore, people resort to folic acid deficiency tests to monitor their nutrition levels.

Vitamins Folic Acid

The lack of folic acid can result to serious complications in an individual. Folic acid deficiency leads to anemia, which is also a stress related condition. Instances that increase the need for folic acid include alcohol intake, diarrhea, fever, hemo-dialysis, and intestinal illness. If you have these conditions, your doctor will usually require you to take folic acid testing and other nutrition tests to assess your need for folic acid.

Vitamins Folic Acid

Folic acid is found in green vegetables, potatoes, cereal products, fruit, and organ meat such as the liver or kidney. While there are different food supplements available, effective dietary conditions are more important to improve the health and wellness of an individual. It is also a crucial substance for infants. Pediatricians usually regulate the intake of nutrients including the vitamin B diet of the baby's milk formula. This is done to prevent complication on the baby's health and wellness in the future. In addition, pregnant women usually have their folic acid levels tested to evaluate the health of the mother. A healthy folic acid and vitamin B level reduces the chances of certain birth defects.

Folic Acid Testing

Testing folic acid levels is the initial step in knowing traces of nutrition deficiency in the body. Folic acid deficiency is a health hazard in the long run as it can greatly affect the overall health and wellness of a person. Testing is essential for women and anemic patients. Knowing ones vitamin level through folic acid deficiency testing will go a long way in filling the nutritional void. With the information taken from folic acid tests, you can take the correct nutritional and dietary adjustments. Testing does not only measure the health and wellness of an individual. Additionally, knowing the nutrition levels through nutrition deficiency testing will give you more information in detecting serious conditions earlier.

What Foods Contain Folic Acid?

Many people are lacking in folic acid as well as vitamin B. Apart from taking a supplement, the only way to get sufficient amounts is through vitamin B rich food. It is common for someone to be lacking in B12 but can't see the signs because they are taking folate. For this reason you should always choose supplements that have folate and the full B vitamin range as well.

Vitamins Folic Acid

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) have a recommended DV percentage for folate which is 400 and above. The simplest way to describe the DV value is whatever the percentage of the ingredient is, that represents the percentage of your daily intake. In one day you may eat two 25% DV folic acid items, followed by five 10% DV folic acid items to make your total daily intake of folic acid 100%. All cereal that has 100% DV fortified folic acid is a simple and great daily source. The higher the DV percentage, the better a source of folic acid the particular food is.

Vitamins Folic Acid

With a high 45% DV, just 3 OZ of braised beef liver is a fantastic way to get folic acid. The next step down is 25% for any 25%DV serving of cereal or half a cup of boiled immature cowpeas / blackeyes.

Another good folic acid source is spinach, and only a half cup has a 25% folic acid DV. The same amount of boiled great northern beans or at least four spears of asparagus would have a 20% DV. These are both excellent foods for your daily folic acid intake, and offer many other health benefits as well.

Some other foods with good folic acid levels are green peas, broccoli, lettuce and avocado. They are all about 10-15% DV, as well as orange juice, vegetarian beans, raw spinach and wheat germ. Pretty much all leafy vegetables which are dark green in color have high folic acid values.

Even if you feel you have adequate intake of foods that contain folic acid quiet often, it really needs to be maintained daily to prevent problems. There are so many positive health benefits to ensuring you have an optimum vitamin B and folate level, it is worth it for everyone to take a dietary supplement also.

Cereals, vegetables, liver and juices can all be made a part of your daily diet plan to prevent illness or disease due to folic acid deficiencies. By checking the DV value for foods you should be able to easily make up your 100% folic acid DV per day.

Side Effects Of Folic Acid

There are some side effects of Folic Acid that you should be aware of. While they rarely occur you need to identify them so that you can see your doctor about reducing the amount you take or stop taking it all together. The side effects can be mild or severe. Mild side effects include are nausea, loss of appetite, bloated abdomen, flatulence, bitter taste, insomnia or difficulty concentrating. Your doctor will likely reduce the amount of Folic Acid you take and monitor the results closely.

Vitamins Folic Acid

If you are experiencing severe side effects to Folic Acid such as difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of your lips, tongue or face, or hives then you need to see immediate medical attention and stop taking the Folic Acid. Other side effects that have been noted include fever, general weakness or discomfort, reddened skin, shortness of breath, skin rash or itching, and wheezing and they can vary in severity.

Vitamins Folic Acid

The University of Maryland reports that the instances of having a side effect from Folic Acid is rare but if you take a large dose of 15,000 mcg or more you may experience stomach pain, disrupted sleep patterns, skin reactions, and seizures. According to the Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, Folic Acid is very safe in doses of 5,000 mcg or less. It is the larger doses that cause the side effects including nausea, decreased appetite, bloating, gas, decreased ability to concentrate, and insomnia to occur. If you suffer from seizures a large dose of Folic Acid will affect the effectiveness of the common medication Phenytoin, also known as Dilantin.

If you take Folic Acid, you should add a supplement of B Vitamins, especially 12, because the Folic Acid can lead to a deficiency. While the side effects from Folic Acid rarely occur, the risk is higher if you have a Vitamin B deficiency. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking Folic Acid, make sure you talk to your doctor so action can be taken.

Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid Deficiency - A Theory of Untimely Graying

For centuries, health industry experts have espoused the principle that once our hair starts becoming gray, there's no strategy to reverse the clock on Mother Nature. However, fresh studies have proven promising advances inside the subject of graying hair - and quite a few scientists are optimistic that these new discoveries won't just unlock the secret of gray hair, but will reverse the process altogether.

Vitamins Folic Acid

Researchers know that there are various contributing components to graying hair, such as oxidative stress and genetics; nonetheless we're beginning to learn far more about the role of melanin with the graying hair process, and the way this pigment can also be used to reduce and even take away gray hair. To recap, melanin is a form of an amino acid named tyrosine, which aids in support healthy brain function. As a derivative of tyrosine, melanin is responsible for the pigmentation, or coloring, of our hair and skin. At the same time to giving us with our unique skin and hair colors, melanin's foremost role is to absorb harmful UVA rays and transform them into energy, thus reducing our chances of producing deadly skin diseases and cancers. Insert Melanin deficiency can result in an assortment of diseases, such as albinism an even Parkinson's Diseases - and naturally, this deficiency also directly contributes to gray hair.

Vitamins Folic Acid

Research have demonstrated that hair with higher amounts of melanin are more saturated in color than their deficient counterparts; consequently, when melanin death occurs (which can arise due to the natural aging process, stress and genetics), the hair follicles become much less saturated with color and therefore are effectively bleached into gray hair. So it stands to cause that if a reduction in melanin production contributes to graying hair, then an expansion in melanin production can re-saturate the hair with pigmentation, thereby successfully reverse the process.

And that's specifically what scientists set-out to test. Below are the results of this investigation... can gray hair be re pigmented via a diet of B12 and folic acid.

In a two-year analysis performed through the Department of Dermatology at University Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden, researchers discovered that folic acid, vitamin B12 and sun exposure could help encourage re-pigmentation of one's skin and hair. One hundred patients with vitiligo - an ailment where the skin loses its pigmentation - ended up being treated with folic acid and B12, and told to increase their exposure to the sun. After three to six months, researchers noted that re-pigmentation was evident in 64% of patients, with six patients experiencing total re-pigmentation. [Juhlin, L and MJ Olson. "Improvement of vitiligo after oral treatment with vitamin B12 and folic acid and the importance of sun exposure", Department of Dermatology, University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden].

These findings were further supported by a research conducted by researchers from the Department of Dermatology at the University of Alabama, there scientists observed that patients who suffered from vitiligo frequently displayed diminished blood levels of folic acid. By increasing folic acid consumption by means of oral administration, researchers reported that patients had re-pigmentation without having side effects. [Montes LF, Diaz ML, Lajous J, Garcia NJ., "Folic acid and vitamin B12 in vitiligo: a nutritional approach", Department of Dermatology, University of Alabama, Birmingham Medical Center].

As these scientific studies have demonstrated, re-pigmentation of one's hair and skin is attainable, given that the individual increases their intake of certain vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamin B12 and folic acid. Graying hair doesn't have to be a "fact of life"; instead, it is possible to revive and increase melanin production within the hair follicles, thereby restoring the hair to its natural colour and luster.

4 Things You May Not Know About Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid)

Vitamin B9 (also referred to as folic acid) is a B-complex vitamin. It was officially discovered by Henry K. Mitchell in 1941 when he isolated a substance in foods that could help prevent anemia (a lower than average number of red blood cells) and named it folic acid. The main role of B9 is to help the body make DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) which both carry important genetic information that is essential for the formation of new cells. However, it does a lot more than this. In the following article I am going to help you learn a little more about vitamin B9 by discussing four things you may not know about this vital vitamin.

Vitamins Folic Acid

1) IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTHY GROWTH:- As I mentioned above vitamin B9 plays a key role in the formation of DNA and RNA. Both of these contain genetic information which is used as a basis for new cell production. Folic acid also helps the body produce red blood cells to replace those that are destroyed on a daily basis, hence the reason its discovery was linked to the prevention of anemia. Therefore, B9 is essential for healthy growth because without it your body could not manufacture new cells effectively.

Vitamins Folic Acid

2) GREENS ARE THE BEST SOURCE:- Green, leafy vegetables are the by far the best dietary source of vitamin B9. Broccoli, green beans and spinach are all good choices for getting your recommended daily allowance (RDA) of folic acid which is 0.2mg in men and women and 0.4mg in pregnant women. However, if you really cannot face the prospect of eating your greens then oranges and orange juice contain lower levels of B9.

3) THERE ARE NUMEROUS FACTORS THAT CAN CAUSE A DEFICIENCY:- Not eating enough vitamin B9 rich foods is just one reason that you may become deficient in this vitamin. Burn victims, cancer patients and pregnant women all require higher than normal levels of folic acid and so can become deficient even when they are getting the RDA. Certain medications also interfere with B9 absorption and can lead to a deficiency. Therefore, if you are affected by one of the above factors you may want to consider supplementation so that you do not become deficient.

4) YOU CAN OVERDOSE ON B9:- It is possible to get too much folic acid although this is normally the result of excessive supplementation. If you do overdose on B9 it can potentially mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. It can also stop certain medications from working properly. Furthermore, it can affect you physically leading to skin problems, sleep problems and stomach pain. Therefore, whilst vitamin B9 supplementation may be a necessity just make sure you do not overdo it.

As you can see there is a lot more to vitamin B9 than just producing DNA and RNA. I hope this article has given you a better understanding of folic acid and helped you learn something new.

Signs of Low Folic Acid - Uncover the Deficiency Symptoms of Low Vitamin B9 Levels

Your body needs a constant amount of folic acid, Vitamin B9, everyday. You must take care of this amount because it is not manufactured naturally in your body.

Vitamins Folic Acid

If you are taking care to watch the nutrients that you are getting, would you know if you were having a deficiency because of any one of them? If not, it is important that you know what the symptoms are, especially those of low folic acid.

Vitamins Folic Acid

Your body can suffer some ill effects when you don't get enough of the complex B vitamins, especially folic acid.

This folate is responsible for some functions in your brain that make it possible for you to sleep well, determines your mood, and regulates your appetite.

The neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin in your brain depend on B9 for healthy production for controlling these functions properly.

Studies have shown that vitamin B9 also plays a role in the cardiovascular system. The circulatory condition called atherosclerosis can be caused through a B9 deficiency.

This is because folic acid is the nutrient that keeps down levels of a protein in the blood called homocysteine. When this protein breaks down, it is clings to the walls of the arteries and induces blockage.

One good thing about folic acid is that you can get it in a multivitamin. Making the choice to take one everyday is super protection in never having to worry about a deficiency.

Don't be fooled into thinking you are always getting everything you need just from the food you eat. Many nutrients are lost in the cooking and storage of food, with folic acid being one that is super sensitive to this loss more some than others.

If you don't take a multivitamin everyday, you should do so. This is the best way to get all the vitamins and nutrients that you need everyday.

You won't have to worry about whether or not you have forgotten one kind of food or nutrient during each day if you are taking a supplement in addition to maintaining a well balanced diet.

However, you will need to make sure that you make a good choice of supplement to be able to receive any nutritional benefit from them at all.

The multivitamin supplement that you choose needs to be GMP regulated during formation and it needs to include additional ingredients like amino acids, trace elements, and herbal extracts from bacopa, ginger, and milk thistle.

I take this kind of natural multivitamin brand everyday and I can tell you from personal experience that it has made a noticeable difference in my health.

Nature Made Folic Acid 600 mcg with DHA - 300 Softgels Overview

Folic acid, also known as folate and folacin, is essential in cell division, DNA synthesis, and the manufacturing of brain chemicals, or neurotransmitters in the body. Without adequate levels of folic acid, cells do not divide properly. Folic acid is vital to the development of the nervous system of a fetus. A deficiency of folic acid during pregnancy has been linked to several birth defects, such as the neural tube defect spina bifida. Therefore, it is critical for women of child-bearing age to consume 400 mcg of folic acid per day. In addition, folic acid may also play a significant role in heart health. It does so by helping to keep homocysteine levels down in the blood. Homocysteine is a substance that formed when Vitamin B12 and folic acid levels are low, and research has indicated it may be a possible risk factor for heart health. Folic acid is recommended to be part of a daily regimen for Womens Health, Stress, Heart Health, Mood/Emotional Well-Being, Prenatal. Healthful diets with adequate folate may reduce a women`s risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord birth defect. The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences recommends that women capable of becoming pregnant consume 400 mcg of folic acid per day.
